FAAC raises the bar on university parking

FAAC RAISES THE BAR ON UNIVERSITY PARKING

Parking for students and staff at the University of Warwick is efficiently managed
round the clock with 46 automatic barriers. Over the past two years, more than 20 of
these have been upgraded to the latest generation FAAC 640 hydraulic barrier system.
Others are due to be replaced in the coming two years. For added security, some of
the barriers at the university are customised with optional extras from the FAAC
range.

With more than 16,000 students and nearly 5,000 staff members, the University of
Warwick is a major force in the West Midlands. It contributes about £1 billion a year
to the regional economy and is the fourth largest employer in Warwickshire and
Coventry. It provides parking for 4,163 staff and student cars in 20 academic and
residential car parks across its 290ha campus on the outskirts of Coventry.

Alan Piper, Network Engineer responsible for facilities management, says after
originally acquiring seven different makes of barrier – some of which were unreliable
and led to damage claims from car owners – the university is standardising on FAAC
systems to streamline maintenance and reduce risk. He says: “We are very
comfortable with FAAC, which represents quality, excellent service and good value
for money. We’ve had absolutely no issues with the FAAC barriers.”
Coventry-based installer D.G. Morris is the university’s preferred supplier. Director
Darren Morris and his team installed the FAAC 640 hydraulic barriers, which are
operated either by radio keys, or used in conjunction with permits, and pay on foot or
pay and display systems. In areas of higher security risk, some of the barriers are
fitted with FAAC magnetic locks and vandal-proof skirts.

The FAAC 640 hydraulic barrier system, with beams from 4 to 7 metres, is a robust
design for heavy traffic in industrial and commercial applications. The 640 range also
includes anti-crush hydraulics, a secure locking system for open and closed positions,
and manual release. Barrier opening times range from 4 to 8 seconds. The
microprocessor-controlled operating mechanism and 624 BLD control board are
housed in a tough but neat slimline cabinet, which is also available in stainless steel
for more difficult environments. The 640 system is part of FAAC’s extensive range of
hydraulic barriers, with standard and rapid-lifting variants, all offering 100% duty
cycles. Like all FAAC systems, the 640 range is designed for trouble-free installation.
Darren Morris has been in business since 1990 and now installs FAAC gate
automation systems and barriers throughout the West Midlands and further afield,
using sub-contract installers when necessary. He says: “We prefer to install FAAC
systems because you put them in, program them and go. There is no fuss. Other
makes can be a nightmare for the installer.”

FAAC is a world leader in gate and door automation, with more than 40 years’
experience. The company has manufacturing and development facilities in Italy and
Ireland and distributes its products in more than 90 countries. In the UK, FAAC is the
market leader in residential and commercial markets, which it serves through a
national network of 800 approved installers, all trained to FAAC’s high standards.
